Ferries on the Caspian Sea

The only website available to get some information and contact details is the:
The Azerbaijan State Caspian Shipping Company. Otherwise blogs or websites of other travelers are the best source of information. Below is some general information

  • There are 5 countries bordering the Caspian Sea. These countries are: Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran
  • There are only three ports on the Caspian Sea which offer transport across the sea. These ports are: Baku (Azerbaijan) - Aktau (Kazakhstan) - Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan)
  • The Ferry from Baku to T.bashi should leave every day and should take about 12 hours but in fact one often havs to wait few days before departing or docking in the harbour
  • You need a Visa before entering Turkmenistan but the problem is the tourist visa is issued with exact dates of entry and exit (no flexibility) and so if the ferry is delayed your visa might expire. You might get the Visa at the point of entry but it means the visa does not start until you enter the Turkmenistan.
  • Ferries are very basic, don't expect a luxury cabin
  • In general to cross the Caspian see, between paper work (Visa, car documents etc) and irregular schedules, it can take a couple of days. If you are on a tight schedule rather go via Iran or via Russia and Kazakhstan.
  • See more information about the ferry on the Turkmenistan page

Shipping company from Europe to Asia, Oceania and America

This company has a service from UK to Asia (Korea, Japan and China) and also to America and Oceania. It is a good option if you drive from London to Vladivostok in Russia or viceversa and you want to send your car back or have your car when you get there. Local companies can then ship your car to / from Vladivostok to Korea.
