Driving in The Isle of Man
Driving in the Isle of Man is similar to driving in the United Kingdom as people drive on the left hand side of the road. The Isle of Man is the only place in the world that does not have a general speed limit. However in many areas there are speed limits between 30 mph to 60 mph.
People usually drive very carefully in the Isle of Man and obey to the speed limit and other traffic regulations. Not respecting traffic regulations can cost you a heavy fine and even a visit to the Court! Don’t even think of drinking and driving! This could result in imprisonment and certainly will come with a heavy fine!
The roads are single lane and there are no freeways at all. Many roads are quite narrow and often, if a car is parked, you have to wait for on coming traffic on the opposite side to pass before you can go.
Because many roads pass through farm areas, one should always be aware that there could be cows or sheep in the road. Horses are also taken for rides along these roads, and care should be taken when overtaking so as not to unsettle them.
If you decide to move to the Isle of Man you will be required to obtain a local driving license.
The Isle of Man has its own vehicle registration system and the number plates are issued in a random way therefore they don’t indicate how old the vehicle is.
In most parking areas around the island, the driver is required to display a parking disc that can be obtained at the Sea Terminal, Airport, Tourist information and post offices This disk is left in the front window and should indicate the time that you parked. Time limits in parking bays are monitored in this way
