International Motor Insurance Certificate (Green Card)
The International Motor Insurance Certificate or Green Card, is an is internationally recognised document to use as evidence that the holder has the minimum insurance cover required by law in the country visited and also is a proof of third party insurance, for example in the case of an accident, when travelling abroad.
Lots of motorist who have a Fully Comprehensive in they own country, often think to have the same level of cover when travelling outside the country, but often they have just the basic cover therefore, check with your motor insurer or broker what cover you have abroad to avoid the risk of experiencing problems. If necessary arrange an European extension and make sure you have your Green Card with every single detail correct, well in advance of your travel date
If you don’t take the Green Card when you travel abroad, at least bring a certificate to proof you are insured. However it is always advisable to get one to avoid problem in case of accident.
Getting a green card it is easy and free (you might get charge a small fees from your broker) so there isn't really an excuse not to have one. With a green card, you have proof at hand that you have basic motor insurance.
Many countries, especially outside Europe, require buying additional insurance at the border.
